Chronic Disease:
Conquering the Crisis

Did you know that the single most effective way of controlling your health care costs is by controlling chronic disease? Chronic disease accounts for 75 cents of every dollar spent on medical care in the United States.

It wasn’t always that way. There was a time when infectious diseases were a major cause of death and disability. Antibiotics and immunizations relegated diseases like polio and tuberculosis to the history books.

But in their place we have diabetes, kidney disorders, cardiovascular disease and other chronic conditions. These, too, can often be prevented — but not with a simple shot or a few pills. Because chronic diseases are lifestyle related.

The Growing Cost of Chronic Diseases

Chronic diseases cost us billions of dollars every year in the U.S, and the costs are only expected to rise. This map shows the cost of treating cancer, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, stroke, mental disorders and pulmonary conditions in 2003 (the last year this data was available) and projections for 2023. It makes a good case for the need to lower healthcare costs.   Source: GEblogs.com

The four biggest risk factors are smoking, poor nutrition, physical inactivity and excessive alcohol consumption — more than genetics, more than social circumstances, even more than access to health care.

Few people would flinch at getting a shot that would save their life. But changing behavior patterns is more difficult.

A RAND study shows the importance of Wellvibe’s approach to health management:

A multi-year study of nearly 600,000 employees by the nonprofit research organization RAND Corporation found significant cost savings and health benefits from company wellness programs that target employees with chronic diseases. The RAND Wellness Programs Study noted a remarkable $3.80 return on investment (ROI) for every dollar invested in employee disease management programs, compared to only $.50 to the dollar for more typical employee lifestyle management programs. Researchers recommended that “employers who are seeking a healthy ROI on their programs should target employees who already have chronic diseases.”

That’s why you need Wellvibe.

Wellvibe identifies those who are at risk for chronic disease and puts them on a path to reverse that risk. And it identifies where chronic disease already exists, and helps those employees better manage their condition.

Chronic disease takes an enormous toll, both financially and physically, and can no longer be ignored. Almost half of all U.S. adults have at least one chronic condition. It’s a serious problem. Wellvibe is the serious solution.
